Ready-made template or custom design?
The differences between ready-made and custom design in website projects, their advantages and limitations, and when each should be chosen.
One of the first decisions in a website project is whether to use a ready-made design or to design the site from scratch. A large part of the difference in project duration and cost comes from this decision.
Ready-made design
A ready-made design (theme or template) is a pre-built page layout. Colours, typefaces, logo and content are adapted to the brand, while the page structure is largely kept.
Its main advantages are time and cost. Because most of the design already exists, the site can be launched quickly and at a lower cost. Its limitations are that it may resemble other sites using the same theme, and that changes the theme does not support can be difficult.
Custom design
In a custom design, pages are designed from scratch around the business’s needs. The arrangement of information, the path the visitor follows and the brand’s presentation are planned at the start of the project.
Its main advantage is that the site has a look unique to the brand and fully meets the business’s requirements. On the other hand, the project takes longer and requires a larger budget.
Which one, and when?
- For new businesses, projects with a limited budget or projects that need to launch quickly, a ready-made design is a suitable starting point.
- For brands that want to stand out clearly from competitors, custom design is the better choice.
- For projects with specific flows such as bookings, quote forms or product selectors, custom design accommodates these flows better.
- For brands with an established corporate identity, custom design may be preferred so that the site matches this identity fully.
What matters beyond design
Whichever approach is chosen, the main factors that determine a website’s success are: loading quickly on mobile devices, letting visitors find the information they need easily, making contact channels clear, and being visible in search engines. A well-configured ready-made design can deliver better results than a poorly planned custom one.
The Piron’s approach
Both options are offered. With a ready-made design, the theme is adapted to the corporate identity and content. With a custom design, pages are planned together with the client and designed from scratch. The choice is made by weighing budget and goals together.
